Water is everywhere!

September 15, 2010

Recently I read an article about new techniques that are allowing us to visualize the structure of molecules. These techniques are allowing us to obtain direct images of water and learn more about the molecular structure of water. The images have taught us that water coats almost all surfaces and is in a constant flux. The images have also helped us understand how it coats surfaces. Apparently, the first layer of water on mica is actually two water molecules thick, and has the structure of ice. Then once that layer gets done forming, a second layer forms! This layer is also two molecules thick of ice. Personally, I find this really cool because I would have never thought that water actually has an ice structure at room temperature! The technology we have today is truely unbelievable. It is constantly helping us find out new things and I can’t wait to see where technology will take us with science!
